Cape Verde currency
On the islands of Cape Verde the currency is the Cape Verdean Escudo. However you can pay for shops and services with Euros also but you may receive change in Escudos. Most shops and services do an equal exchange from Euro to CVE (Cape Verdean Escudo) but you will find some do an exchange rate of approx 1 Euro - 110 CVE. The easiest way to keep track of what you are spending is to consider 100 escudos as 1 Euro. ( It is in fact slightly less that 1 Euro but it is more simple to work things out this way. For example if you go to the supermarket and spend 1000 escudos it is in effect approximately 10 Euros! There are many different coins in the 'small change' in Cape Verde including cents and escudos and this can become very confusing. It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the coins so that you do not end up with too much 'spare change' when you leave. All shops will accept coins so use them up whenever you can!
